Sea Change

I apologise for my absence if there is anyone who reads my blog.  This time of the year is always crazeee!  Not only did I have christmas to organize for (it totally snuck up on me this year), I have countless birthdays and weekends spent rarely at home in the good ol month of December.  Although I still managed to make a yummy maple syrup and walnut cheesecake!

This year was a stiffling 40 degrees, considering the weather around the world I guess I should count myself lucky.  With the Eastern states of Australia flooding and Europe/US having ridiculous amount of snow dumped on them sending flights and travel into a chaotic mess, I guess Perth isn't such a bad place to be at the moment.

Little miss lost is still lost, but thinking of postponing her trip to America and move indefinitely to Melbourne.  I feel as if I need to move forward and create a new chapter of my life and do it while I'm still single and baby free.  Hopefully I'll get clarification and realise what I want to do.  Life is an ongoing journey and I now feel like its time for a different direction.  Problem is I have a house and two dogs, anyone have any suggestions or pointers on moving, I'd really appreciate it!

I'm melting, melting.........

It is Monday my RDO, the first I have managed to actually have off in a few weeks and its is a sweltering 36 degrees!  My air conditioning conveniently decided to stop working last week, so I am dripping whilst trying to get in some much needed housework.  I desperately want to hit the beach (only a 10 min drive from mine, just one awesome thing about living in Perth) but the bad thing about having a Monday off is everyone else is working.

Its been a little while and we're about to hit the silly season and it is about to get much worse.  I must say I prefer to be out and about rather then have nothing to do, but my poor little house suffers from my absence.  I'm sure I'll get there eventually bit by bit.

I also have a self inflicting limp which also makes life a little difficult.   A few weeks ago I decided to play basketball again.  I used to play when I was much younger, but the impact sport wasn't doing anything for my dodgy knees and ankle so I reluctantly stopped, until now, when I decided enough was enough I need to get fit again and the gym just doesn't cut it for me.

Unfortunately I momentarily forgot the ol bod aint what it used to be, didn't warm up enough and proceeded to injure the biggest quad muscle you have.  That was 2 weeks ago.......off to the physio I go, here's hoping it will heal very soon, preferably before Southbound!  A huge 3 day festival held in Busselton I cannot wait.  Really looking forward to Kitty Daisy and Lewis, Bliss n Esso, Ladyhawke, Tame Impala, Public Enemy, Paul Kelly and Dan Sultan.  I'm a Southbound virgin so can't wait to pop my cherry!

Prob best to stay home, staying home equates to not spending money which at late is what I am trying to do.  Planning on hitting South America for my big 30 late next year, I must save like Ive never saved before.  So probably hitting the antique show wasn't such a good idea in hindsight and having a lady mark down a gorgeous, huge hand painted Japanese tea set from $230 - $170, didn't help.  Well you only live once and I now own something I can hand down and apparently use according to the lady selling it to me.  One problem with that I don't own a table ha ha!

On one last note - Life is precious, make every moment count, you never know when your time is up............

I'm back........

Well I've been back for a week, but it seems to have taken that long to get my act back together.  We were lucky enough to get near perfect weather in New Zealand and miss another earthquake in Christchurch by a couple of days!

What a beautiful, scenic country the South Island is, I am officially in love with Queenstown and after initially wanted to hit Queenstown to ski I'm debating whether spring/summer is the time to go.  It has such a great relaxed vibe.  We were lucky enough to have some spare time there and I spent afternoon eating lunch at a Irish pub right near to a awesome busker, followed by a massive ice cream served by a hottie from Argentina (Queenstown is full of young people from all over the world) and then ended feeding ducks and just watching them by the lake.  I haven't felt that relaxed in a long time, who knew such simple things can bring so much serenity and joy.

Queenstown was definitely the best, Christchurch was pretty, but doesn't have alot happening there and all the little stops on the way were nice, but Queenstown is so much more appealing.  After a week of indulging in very rich food and four course dinners most nights I am getting back on the health and well being wagon and starting to eat better, walk my dogs and as of Tuesday night start playing basketball again.  I won't lie I'm a little scared, but looking forward to it.  Here's hoping I don't do myself a serious injury this bod aint what it used to be.........wish me luck!

On a completely seperate note, yay to Burma finally  releasing pro-democracy leader Aung Sung Su Chi without any conditions!  Here's hoping this is a step forward for Burma.

5 more sleeps, NZ here I come!

Now, as hard a job it is and even though its not a high paying job, being a travel agent sometimes has its perks.  I am going to the South Island of New Zealand for work for a glorious whole week!  When a travel agent says she's going on a trip for work, usually that's what they mean.

You hardly get any free time, you have to inspect up to 5 hotels a day, which doesn't sound a lot, but hotels insist on you seeing every room type (even the ones you never sell) and after the first few they all start to mesh together and you forget what whats!

Not the case on a scenic tours educational.  A 5 star touring company, you get to experience what a client would on the same trip and we only have 2 hotel inspections, of which we are staying at anyway, on the whole trip!  They weather will be quite cool, which I don't mind, fingers crossed it will snow in Queenstown!  The only time I saw snow was in Canada when I was aboard the train that does the Rockie's and what a experience that was!

My personal trip in Feb is also booked to stay a week in Kota Kinabalu.  Since Malaysian bought super cheap flights and they now fly direct from Perth (which now only takes 5 1/2 hours) I thought instead of Bali, again, I'd go back to KK.  Its been 5 years so I'm sure it would've changed by now.  Also bought my overnight side trip to Sandakan for a mere $30AUD, thank you Air Asia!  Will be staying near the orangutan Sepilok centre so I check out the gorgeous creatures in there natural habitat.  Have to say at the moment, not got much to complain about, life is good!

Vintage finds and spring, what a combo!

Not much to report for today.  I had my RDO and I spent it trying to clear out more of my clutter and trying to be brutal getting rid of clothes in my wardrobe.

But yesterday I helped my cousin out in my first vintage fair in Fremantle and even made some extra mullah on the way.  It was at Fremantle town hall a beautiful old hall in the middle of Fremantle, perfect setting for some vintage wares and entertainment in between.  The weather was perfect, sunny spring weather.

A fantastic swing dance group kicked of the entertainment, followed by a Lucy Ball impersonator and a dancing envelope ha ha I probably missed a few whilst manning the fort, but technically that was what I was there for.

I got rid of my beloved boots from Chiang Mai, a couple of dresses and even sold a few of my handmade rings (I'll leave them for a new post).  Since I made a nice little profit I treated myself to a beautiful navy and checked dress in mint condition.  Know Ive had a taste I just may have to share another stall with my cousin!

Comfort dressing for chores - Shorts from cotton and shirt vintage shop in Chiang Mai

Chopper from my fav cartoon One piece, a crazy Asian series about a young boy pirate who ate fruit that turns all his limbs into rubber, worth checking out for a laugh, I love random stuff like that!

The beautiful find

Thrift shop finds and spring cleaning

Soooo yesterday I had the day off and decided to stop procrastinating and try to at least start to de clutter my house.  So I lugged 2 garbage bags full of clothes (I still have 4 to get rid of, but trying to earn some extra dosh for those) off to the local thrift shop and thought while I was there I'd have a gander.

I'm helping out my cousin at a stall at the vintagevixensandvamps.blogspot.com  Fair in Freo this Sunday and found a few things to add to the collection and completely by accident another dress to my wardrobe.  It fits like a glove so I think it was fate, well that's my story and I'm sticking to it!  I don't have a red dress and was thinking of getting one, when I came across this baby.

The label reads lovers Australia, not really clued in on labels, I just like what I like.  It looks 80's maybe early 90's and apart from the fixable hem its in mint condition.  Thrift shopping isn't what it used to be and I refuse to pay the inflated prices "vintage" items can cost just because its in fashion, but you can still find some gems in the charity stores and it goes to a good cause.  By the way I'm not implying I did the whole thing before it was cool, my auntie got me into it when I was younger and when I studied art I had a little extra time and less money to op shop lol

Not quite as much as I wanted to do around the house but spring also equals to hay fever, baby steps......

Karaoke, music and Dan Sultan!

OMG what a bday weekend!  Since it was Wednesday I was spolit with homemade lasagne and pavlova, Friday Karaoke with my beautiful family and One Movement all weekend long.  Can I just say Subaru Karaoke was beyond expectation Wendy looked after us so well and treated me to a delish lychee martini hmm. I finally got the nerve to talk to Dan Sultan and his band and they were soo friendly no idea what I was worried about.

If you're not from Perth One Movement is a huge showcase of mostly up and coming music.  The streets and laneways of Perth were littered with musicians on top of the actual festival on the Esplanade from all over the world.  Have to say couldnt really ask for a better bday.

A few bands and musicians worth mentioning and probably alot more then unfortunately I didnt get to see - Hungry kids of Hungary (Brisbane, AUS), Miyavi (Japan), The Holidays (Sydney, AUS), Grenediers,  Cloud Control (NSW, AUS), Kora (NZ) and Biuret (South Korea).

On a side note to past weeks, I have a few pics from my galivanting - Electric Vines and Valley wines, Parklife and The amazing Regurgitator!!!!

Groove Armada and the awesomeness that is her detachable "hair" shoulder detail

Electric vines and Valley Wines

I am well and truly spent and sstruggling today after another fun, but full on weekend and to top it off my hayfever has deciding to reek havoc and all I've been doing today is sneezing.  Saturday was basically a day of drinking, dancing and generally having a good time.  The day kicked off early, 9.00am start to meet the bus, eek!  It started off mellow and the weather looked promising, but as the day progressed and the wine flowed it got messy.  Unfortunately the weather also decided to cool off, so I drank more wine and proceeded to bust a move on the dance floor, how else could I keep warm lol?!

By the time the bus was ready to leave at 5pm, my head was swimming and I could feel a headache coming on.  To make matters worse, while waiting for our train, some random idiot starting rambling and pretending to preach and trying to make us say hallelujah.  Now I'm not atheist, I was actually bought up catholic and generally think every religion has something to offer, but this guy was just two bricks short of a barbie (crazy in other words for those non-australians).

I remember boarding the train trying to figure out if that actually happened or if I dreamt it, ahhh gotta love public transport.  On the drive home Maccas was a must, and when I got home I fed my dog and went to bed by 8pm.  I pity the poor bastard on our bus who had a ball that same night and had only a hour to get ready, wonder if he made it.................

So anyways it will be the my birthday Wednesday and Friday I plan on hitting good ol Karaoke at Suburu Karaoke and restaurant in Northbridge, for the Perthians the link is http://subarukaraoke.com/.  I haven't been there yet, but I have had a gander when they first opened early this year.  The price is extremely reasonable and the manager there was nice enough to offer a free room upgrade and free platter on arrival, score! The rest of the weekend will be spent at One Movement music Festival and a wedding squashed in the middle of all that Sunday.

I cannot wait for One Movement, my fav crooner from Melbourne will be there, the very talented Dan Sultan!  If you haven't heard of him do yourself a favour and jump on his website http://www.dansultan.com/.  I first discovered his smooth vocals at One Movement last year and I've been obsessed ever since!  His live shows are always energetic and he possesses so much charisma it should be illegal!  He's definitely done really well since then, appearing in musical Bran Nue Day and hitting all the hot festivals around Australia.  Just to give you an idea he's gone from performing last year at 3pm on a side stage to 8pm this year on the main stage.  Plus I always try and support the locals, can't wait!  I'll try and take some piccies and jazz up this page a bit, hopefully my computer at home will be working again soon.........

MUSIC, MUSIC AND MORE MUSIC

My weekend, without meaning to, turned into a weekend of music.  Not that I'm complaining mind you.  As I have already previously blogged it kicked off Friday night at Amplifier Bar watching Abbe May and Bog Logg III.  Since I didn't get home til one and had to work Saturday, Saturday night was a bust, passing out involuntarily at 9.30pm (I know such a grandma thing to do).  In my defence Im still recovering from getting my wisdom teeth out.

Sunday was Parklife time, I'm glad I managed to snag free tickets ($20 donation), because I was really disappointed.  It didn't start well with the venue only having one way to get in, I don't know if its just me getting old or the type of festival it is (my first parklife), but it seemed full of half naked, fake tanned posers, who have no idea of festival etiquette.  I enjoyed DJ Mike, 2manydjs and Groove Armada, especially groove Armada.  Her outfit was amazing, she wore a black lyra catsuit with big removable shoulder pads that had hair (not sure if it real) flowing down and off the sleeves.  Her dancing moves were sometimes questionable, but with a voice like that it would be unfair for her to be able to dance as well!  Missy Elliot was a massive disappointment, singing only 5 songs in her set and wasting the rest of the time with dj's and some other random singer.

Monday made up for Sunday, back to Amplifier Bar I went and relived my youth at the Regurgitator gig and what a show it was!  Back when I studied art and interior design in TAFE, i discovered a station called Triple J, yes I was a little behind, but I grew up listening to rnb and hip hop and fell in love with the Gurg.  Bought Unit and absolutely thrashed it to death.  Unfortunately I never got to see them live, something always came up or I never had anyone to go with.  So when I found out they were coming and tickets were a measly $25, even if it was a Monday night I couldn't let this opportunity pass.  What an energetic, amazing show it was and much to my pleasure they sung all there hits on Unit, I was one happy chappy, head banging may of been involved.........pheww just reading that back is exhausting!

Not that this weekend I will be taking it easy, I intend to partake in Electric vines and Valley wines Saturday and if it was as good as it was last year I'll be hitting the hay at 6pm that night ha ha  For those who don't know its a whole day event of basically eating and drinking, who knows I may add a few photos from the day...........

BOB LOG III - The most incredible one man band ever!

I wasn't going to post a blog today, but I couldn't contain the excitement of what I experienced last night any longer!  I want to share with anyone that will listen, that if you ever get a chance see Bob Log III, he is one of the most amazing musicians I have seen in my life and I can tell you Ive been to plenty of different live acts and have a broad taste in music.

I actually went to see the back up act - Abbe May, a local gal also worth checking out if you're into bluesy rock and had no idea who the headline was.  As soon as he swaggered out playing guitar from the back of the room, dressed in a blue velvet jumpsuit, glittering helmet and black telephone attached to the front of the helmet (which doubles as his microphone so both his hands are free), walking through the crowd before he clamoured on stage I knew it was going to be interesting, but wasn't prepared for just how blown away I'd be and the amount of laughing that was to come (probably not a good idea since my jaw is still sore, but worth every moment).

With songs titled such as "clap your tits", "boob scotch" and "I want your shit on my leg", he is definitely not for the prude and describing his music is no easy task, I liken his music to R.L Burnside if he was on speed.  He's one of those shows that has to be seen to believed and understood.  After blowing the audience away with a few opening songs, he stood up and shouted, "enough of sound check lets start this show"!

Not only a musical genius, he is every bit the entertaining, hilarious showman.  Drinking his "liquid gold", purchased from the audience he had them all eating out of his hand.  Proclaiming how hard it was to drink under his helmet (which never comes off when he performs) and how it would be easier with a straw, no one could help him quick enough, one member even obliged to his request of throwing nothing but bras onstage.  He invited to girls to "straddle on each leg like you would on a horse" and presumed to play whilst they bopped up and down happily on his lap.

Every song ending with him standing up yelling "yeehaw"! He ended the show as he arrived through the crowd and exiting backstage.  I left elated with a huge big goofy grin on my face! Probably not everyones cup of tea, but do yourself a favour and check him out, his official website is http://www.boblog111.com/  Don't you just love random awesomeness, the best nights seem to come when you least expect them!

Wisdom teeth need to be re-named to useless teeth

Unfortunately I have already hit a snag blogging.  Last thursday I had my 3 wisdom teeth taken out and let me tell you it was something I wouldnt wish on my biggest enemy!  Lucky for me, my good ol mum took an extra day off and I spent time at her house being nursed, while she proceeded to blend everything that went through my mouth and make sure I took all my medication like a good little patient.

Just before I went in I eagerly took in everyones advise and stocked up on supplies, but nothing could prepare me for the pain and swelling and amount of feeling sorry for myself, that was to come.  After a couple of days of soup, snack packs, custard, puree fruit I craved and yearned for solid food sooo badly!  Even know its soft food and rabbit like nibbling with my front teeth and thorough rinsing as not to get food stuck in the holes left behind in my gums.

Back home for me Monday and back to work today, but now my internet has had a fit at home and decided not to work, as has my television.  Technology is awesome when it works, arghhhh!!!!

But on a good note, Perth is having a long weekend, I scored free tickets to parklife and I'm reliving my tafe days Monday night and seeing Regurgitator, all in fine and over 20 degree weather, yippee!!  I hope everyone else had a better week, happy long weekend!

Shoes, glorious shoes

As much as I tell myself I don't need anymore shoes, I can't help but continually add to my collection (much to my dads disgust).  I especially seem to add to my shoe heaven when I travel.  The shoes are so cheap and different to what you can get here, what I can I say.  Behold my additions from Chiang Mai (the two boots are from the vintage shops I found, the black ones actually don't fit, I swear they did when I tried them on!), all were under $20, bargains like that can't be left behind!!!!

Elephants, mud and plenty of sweat!

I would like to break my blogging seal and start with my recent trip to Chiang Mai.  I have been on plenty of holidays, but this time I did something I've always wanted to do. Half of my trip was volunteering and after scouring the net for ideas I came across this little gem - http://www.elephantnaturepark.org/

An organisation set up by a local, the incredible Lek, dedicated to rescuing Thailand's national treasure - the elephant.  Set on acres of land with an in built river, this haven is home not only to 30+ elephants, but also dogs (our pack happily adopted us for the week, following us when we did our chores and joining us for meals), buffalo, cats, pigs and anything else of the animal kind that can be helped.  I won't lie, that week was hard work, especially since I'm normally sitting at a desk behind a computer, but it was a experience I will never forget and cherish.

It definitely made me think twice as to what sort of sightseeing and touring I do in the future.  Elephants are not made to have any sort of hard weight on there backs and the treatment to these poor elephants are horrific.  If you ever get to Chiang Mai, I would recommend it, even if its only the day trip, your money goes to an extremely good cause.  Elephants can even be adopted and donations made on the website.

Chiang Mai as a city has a lot to offer and the only thing from making it a perfect destination in Asia, is the fact there is no beaches.  The second biggest city in Thailand, there are plenty of modern and traditional influences.  The night and local markets are very cheap and for a mere $1.00AUD you can enjoy a large plate of, the best I have had, Char kway teow noodles (fat rice stick noodles).

Everything is cheaper at the local, day market, if you're prepared for an overwhelming maze of stalls and stall holders who speak little english, but the Saturday night market for gifts cant be beat.  I even managed to find 2 vintage shops both located next door to each other on 58/2 Inthawaroro, a bit tricky to find, but worthwhile, and if you turn right from there 2 more quirky vintage shops.  I ended my trip in luxury (seeing as I roughed it for most of the trip) at The Chedi, a hotel where I have no complaints.  The service was impeccable and they couldn't do enough to help me!
